Mama Needs a New Pair of Shoes

Okay. Well, she really, really doesn't.

So, instead, she's just going to go out and have a quick little peek around her favourite shoe store.

She has to go look for a couple of shirts for her birthday trip to Chicago because she doesn't want to shop while she's there. She'd much rather spend her time checking out the sights.

So, while she's looking for the perfect couple of shirts, a little stop into the shoe store can't hurt. She can just go in to look. She doesn't have to buy anything.

She can go in just to enjoy that brand new shoe smell. She can go in simply to see what styles are in at the moment. She can admire the bling on them. She can stroke the polished leather with her cheek, eyes glittering and distant, whispering softly, "Preciousssss, my precioussssss."

She can try them on and dream about how great they'll look with her jeans for casual outings, JLo-like. Well, okay. If JLo had no ass the picture would fit. Sort of. She edits the picture again. No ass, bigger boobs, older face. No. Wait. Completely different face. Aha. There we go!

She can try them on and be sooooooooo in love with how comfortable they are. She can marvel at how the soft, supple leather seems to cradle and support her feet so perfectly.

She can stand in a variety of shoes in front of a mirror and see how tall they make her little 5' 2" self seem.

She can do all those things. She doesn't have to buy them.

Well. If they're being offered at an unbelievable price...

Free. Maybe she'll get some shoes for free.

Hey. She traveled to and stayed in New York for free so a free pair of shoes could definitely happen, right?

Yes, it could!

The Bucket List

I was chatting with my friend John today and I was AGAIN telling him how excited I am about my trip to Chicago. He's got to be tired of hearing about it by now. But he's patient and humours me. It's been on my "Bucket List" for a few years now. I'm not a movie buff but now I want to see that one.

When I asked him what was on his bucket list, he said the first thing on his list would have to be to make a bucket list. I don't think I understand how he can't come up with just one even without a list.

That got me thinking about mine. There are things that have gone through my head and made cut after cut till they end up floating around in my heart.

Here are some of mine. Some have explanations. Others are obvious. Others are just from out of left field but somehow they made it to my heart. I plan to add and check off as I make my little way through this great big life.

To Do ~
  • Pet a snake: I used to have a fear of them. I think I'm over it. I want to see for certain
  • Drive a bobcat...or bigger like a backhoe
  • Drive a '62 Corvette hard top convertible: It's candy-apple red with white swooshes & whitewalls, white leather interior and red carpet. Maybe I'll even own it.
  • Take the kids to Disney Land or World: Even if they're 50 when I get to it.
  • Sleep in a castle. No. Really. A real castle: There are castles in Ireland that are like B & B's.
  • Take a train holiday: Maybe after I sleep in the castle I'll hop over to Europe. You know. Since I'd be in the neighbourhood already anyway.
  • Go sport fishing and catch some HUGE fish like a swordfish or a marlin or a great big tuna.
  • Drive a refinished 50's pickup truck with 3 in the tree...and a great big hemi. Hmmm. I might have to become Jay Leno's mistress cuz Lord knows, I'm not going to do that marriage thing again.
  • Be on Amazing Race: TWICE in two different cities, Amazing Race contestants ran by me on the street. That's gotta be a sign.

Done ~

  • Go to Chicago again: To see Buddy Guy up close & personal & maybe even meet him and have a picture taken with him. He's a great guitar player but he's the ultimate showman. He's 72. I'm doing that at the end of the January 2009 so this one will soon be checked off!

  • Drive a semi: Just cuz. I love to drive whatever I can get my hands on.

  • Fly over a lake on a zipline suspended on a cable by my hands through wrist straps: None of that namby-pamby harness stuff for me. There was a lake to catch me, after all.
  • Be on TV: I don't know that I really wanted this one on my bucket list but it happened and now I realize it's pretty cool to have on my list.

  • Go to Disney Land
  • Go to Hawaii
  • Go to Dominican Republic
  • Go to Cuba
  • Go to Mexico
  • Go to Vegas
  • Go to Vegas
  • Go to New York: That one was even FREE! Can't get better than that.

  • Go to Atlantic City: Travel is a theme, here, isn't it?
  • Grow up: Tomorrow it might get unchecked. It depends on the day.
  • Jet boat up a river in bitter cold weather to go fishing & elk hunting: Me, five guys and a great big German shepherd in -30C weather.
  • Come in second to Trapper Deb in a swede saw tournament: Damn 3 seconds!
  • Ride in a 1908 Brush: And Model T's and Model A's, thanks to Marl
  • Ride a mechanical bull

What's on your bucket list?

That's it for now but I WILL be adding!

Resisting The Love

Shoes. Do I ever love me some shoes.

I don't have many, but the ones I have I definitely love.

They make me feel tall. They make me feel like a lady. They make me walk prouder. They make me throw my shoulders back and stride rather than walk. They make me feel pulled together. They make me feel like other people see me as a lady.

Little do those people know that I feel like a girl still struggling to grow up. I suspect I'll feel that way till my dying day. But while I wear my beloved shoes, I can live my little fantasy that I'm a grown-up lady and not a 42 year old girl who's doing her best to find her way and her small place in this great big life.

I'm selective. The shoes I love must be higher end shoes. They must be comfortable, classically fashionable and durable. They must be comfortable enough that I can wear them, walk in them and not have my feet screaming, "Are you KIDDING me??"

The shoes I love must let me focus on my life and my daily activities. They must wear as comfortably as sneakers. I need to be able to grocery shop in them. I need to be able to jog across the street in them to catch the light.
I need to be able to dance all night long in them without having to think about them.

The shoes I love must be classically fashionable. You see, I don't like to spend money, especially on myself, but when I do, it must be on something that will give me the biggest bang for my buck. Fad shoes that make me feel dated just a year after buying them won't do. They must be fashionable for years and years. I recently took in a pair that are about 7 years old to be re-soled. And I still get compliments on them.

The shoes I love must be durable. They must last me 7 years and more. I hope the ones that are being re-soled last me another 5 or more years. Because I love them and I never want to part with them. Sure they're old but I still get compliments on them.

I have 6 pairs of shoes, boots and ankle boots that I love. Really, that more than covers any and every occasion. Six pairs may even be more than I need. The shoes I love have pretty well all been purchased after Christmas since I dislike spending money. Because higher end shoes sure aren't cheap, for me to buy them, they have to be on sale 50% off or better.

Like they are right now.

God, give me the strength to resist.
